A TEAM of young people from a York charity which tackles youth homelessness have volunteered time to help their local hospice.

The volunteers from SASH, who are not homeless, spent several hours painting and tidying up sheds and a garage outside the St Leonard's Hospice’s Acomb shop, giving the storage spaces a much needed makeover.

Gary Hogg, the SASH Active project coordinator, said: “The Enable Project is part of our SASH Active programme and is a simple idea of people coming together to volunteer their time, learn new skills and play an active part in the communities in which they live. This is the third Enable project that SASH have completed for St Leonard’s and our 18th since we started the project almost 4 years ago.

"The young people that were involved all worked really hard to get the work completed and we all agreed that they had done a fantastic job.”

The projects have huge benefits for the participants, including confidence building, learning more about teamwork and acquiring new skills which will come in handy when they live in a place of their own.

Hospice retail manager Helen Moreton said how grateful they are to the volunteers and how wonderful it was to see the two charities working so well in partnership.
