A POPULAR York pub is set to get a £1.6 million revamp - with plans for a new roof terrace and improved beer garden.
JD Wetherspoon, which manages The Punch Bowl near Micklegate Bar, has submitted a planning application to demolish the extension behind the pub and build a new extension and larger kitchen as well as revamping the interior of the building.
Planning documents say the refurbishment could create more jobs and will provide “luxury, comfortable, efficient” facilities for customers.
Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon said the pub would temporarily close for work to take place and added: “The Punch Bowl is a very popular and successful Wetherspoon pub.
“We are always keen to offer our customers the best pub possible and that is why we are looking to redevelop the pub.
“Plans are now in following consultation with a heritage specialist as the pub is listed.
“We are aiming to undertake a full refurbishment, demolish a single storey extension and build a two storey extension, a large roof garden, as well as upgrading the kitchen, toilets and staff rooms.
“We will await the outcome of the planning decision.
“There are no on site or opening dates, and if the work was to go ahead then we would have to close the pub for a short period of time.”
Under the plans, customer toilets, a staff room and staff changing area would be installed on the first floor. The roof garden would feature fixed seats and a small canopy. The roof terrace would close at 11pm and the application says the impact of noise on neighbours will not be significant because the new two storey extension will provide a screen. The refurbishment works are expected to cost about £1.6 million and will include improvements to existing features of the pub to “highlight their historical significance”.
