THE Bishop of Middlesbrough joined forces with the Lord Mayor of York to mark a grizzly point in York's past.

The Rt Rev Terence Drainey and Cllr Keith Orrell, along with the new Lord Lieutenant of North Yorkshire, Johanna Ropner, unveiled a blue plaque at Clifford's Tower to Robert Aske who led a rebellion against Henry VIII.

Aske was the leader of the Pilgrimage of Grace - the northern rebellion against the king's dissolution of the monasteries and in his efforts to restore Catholic monasteries and worship, he would challenge Henry VIII and, in 1537, died on the gallows at Clifford’s Tower.

Yesterday an ecumenical service was held at All Saints Pavement, followed by procession through Coppergate to Clifford's Tower for the plaque unveiling.

The group were joined by members of York Civic Trust and members of the Catholic organisation, the Knights of St Columba.
