EXPRESS locomotives - old and new - lined up together in York yesterday.
Flying Scotsman travelled from London King’s Cross to York where it was presented at the National Railway Museum for the first time alongside a newly-renamed engine.
DB Cargo/LNER Class 90 number 90028 was officially renamed the Sir William McAlpine in honour of the Flying Scotsman’s former owner, who died last year.
A special renaming ceremony was held at the museum’s turntable by NRM director Judith McNicol and Lady Judy McAlpine, in front of specially invited guests, scores of steam enthusiasts and members of the public who gathered to see the historic engine return to York.
The newly-named locomotive then joined Flying Scotsman in the museum’s North Yard for photos, before the Class 90 locomotive led the return leg of the ‘Scotsman Salute’, from York back to London.
