AN ‘inspirational volunteer’ has been nominated for this year's York Community Pride Awards for the hard work he puts in to supporting people with learning difficulties.

Andy Webster, from The Paddock, Boroughbridge Road, York has been put forward by Joan Murray for the Volunteer of the Year award after he set up a disability sports session every Friday at an indoor bowls club in New Earswick.

The award, which is sponsored by Aviva, honours individuals who give their time freely and unselfishly to help others.

She said: "Andy encourages everyone to reach their full potential whether it is playing bowls, badminton, table tennis or Boccia.

“He is also the chairman of the committee which involves a great deal of his spare time organising as well as encouraging athletes to believe they are confident enough to take part in the Special Olympics every four years.

“He organises transport to play games, medical requirements and encouraging athletes who partake to look after each other.”

Mrs Murray added that Andy had gone even further, by helping set up another sports group for people suffering with dementia.

“He has also helped set up another group on a Wednesday lunch time for people suffering from dementia to play Boccia in a friendly atmosphere, which has not only been beneficial for the sufferers but the carers also enjoy the chance to socialise with people in the same circumstances as themselves.

“In my opinion Andy is an inspirational volunteer whose commitment to enhancing other people’s lives should be recognised after so many years of selfless work to make other people’s lives happier.

“I wish we all had his energy and determination.”

On hearing about his nomination for the award, Mr Webster said: “I am shocked that I have been nominated.

“There are so many people doing much more; you never really think that you deserve it but it is nice to know that your work has been noticed.

“It is, however, a great honour to be nominated.”
