THE University of York has fallen in a league table of the best places to study in the UK.

The Complete University Guide 2020, published yesterday, has rated higher education establishments for the past 25 years, based on a range of criteria.

The guide helps students make informed decisions about degree courses and where to study, both overall and by subject.

Having been top dog in the region for nine years running, UoY is now 30th on the list, compared with its ranking of 21st last year.

This is the university’s largest ever drop in the CUG league table.

A university spokeswoman said that they would be looking into the reasons for the drop over the coming weeks in order to try to understand the factors that had influenced the decision.

She said: “We are disappointed that we have fallen in the Complete University Guide table.

“Our student experience will continue to remain at the heart of everything we do, which includes providing high-quality student health and wellbeing support, as well as access to the best research-informed teaching to allow progression into top jobs anywhere in the world.

“Many of our academics are known internationally for their life-changing research and impact and we strive to provide an environment where our experts can flourish.”

“We will be undertaking further analysis of the league table in the coming weeks to understand the main areas of influence on our national ranking.”

The city’s other university, York St John University, ranks at 111th and recorded its first climb up the table since 2015.

Elsewhere, Leeds remains top for the Yorkshire and Humber region, having slipped just one place to 14th - its first dip since 2013.
