EVENTS in York have been cancelled and a local animal home has moved to an appointment only system in light of the coronavirus outbreak.

The main event of the York Irish St Patrick’s Weekend Festival has been cancelled because of the threat.

The event was due to take place today (Saturday) and Sunday in St Sampson’s Square, with a host of Irish culture activities planned, including Irish music, ceilidhs and dancing performances.

But festival organisers York Irish Association made the difficult decision in the interest of public safety.

However, part of the city walls close to Lendal Bridge and Clifford’s Tower are still being lit up green in the evenings this weekend, and again on St Patrick’s Day itself on Tuesday.

Brendan Tannam, the chair of the York Irish Association, said: “In light of recent developments concerning the coronavirus in the UK we have made the hard decision to cancel our York Irish St Patrick’s Weekend Festival this weekend in St Sampson’s Square.

“We have decided to do this to ensure the safety of our wider community.”

In addition, the Pregnant Then Screwed: Live event at York Theatre Royal has been postponed. Described as the UK festival of motherhood and work, it was due to run from 9.30am to 4.30pm on Sunday.

York International Women’s Week has tweeted that the Women For The Environment event, which was due to take place this afternoon (Saturday), has been cancelled.

Meanwhile, the RSPCA York Animal Home has moved to an appointment only system for the time being to protect its staff, volunteers and members of the public. The York, Harrogate and District branch of the RSPCA has urged people not to come to the centre in Landing Lane unless you have an appointment.

A spokesperson for the branch said: “This will allow us to continue with our regular adoption activity while taking on board the government's suggestions for social distancing.”

Anyone who would like to adopt an animal can fill in the forms on the charity’s website https://www.rspca-yorkhome.org.uk/help/adopt-an-animal/ and a member of its team will get back in touch with you.

For everything else call the centre first on 01904 654949 between 11am and 3pm.

The spokesperson added: “Our animal residents will continue to require care during the coronavirus outbreak. We are taking a cautious but practical approach to the government guidance to ensure we don’t put anyone at unnecessary risk of infection and ensure the home can stay operational for the longest period.”
