Recently I visited one of York’s new community hubs and it was brilliant to see just how much the council, volunteers and community organisers have achieved in such a short space of time. The task is huge, but York now has staffed, fully-functioning hubs supporting communities across the city.

With 3,000 volunteers signed up already the response has been truly inspiring. This is an incredibly difficult time for many in York and it speaks volumes that so many residents are jumping at the opportunity to help.

From picking up an extra loaf of bread for a neighbour, to supporting those who aren’t online, to making calls to check on a friend – thank you for everything everyone in York is doing. The last few weeks have seen a great leap forward in understanding needs across our city, tackling poverty and reducing loneliness.

Asking for help can be a difficult thing to do, even when you need it urgently.

That’s why I want to appeal to anyone who thinks they might be at risk in the coming weeks: we are here for you.

If you’re on your own and struggling to manage, or you don’t have any support, but need it because of Covid-19, the council is here to help you through this difficult time.
