A WOMAN and her Mother from North Yorkshire have set up a group in which they make ‘scrub bags’ to keep NHS and care workers safe.

Abbey and Jo Halliwell have decided that they want to do their bit to support the NHS through the coronavirus pandemic.

They set up the Facebook page called ‘Bag The Bug - Covid 19 - York, Harrogate, Knaresborough’ where local GP surgeries can place orders for the bags.

Abbey, a student at York St John University, said: “The bags are washable cotton with a drawstring top

“When the worker finishes their shift, they pop their uniform straight in the bag, close it, then when they get home they open the bag, leaving the uniform inside, and pop it all straight in the washer.

“This helps eliminate cross contamination within their homes.”

The bags are made by local people who can sew, the materials are donated by local people and the family will personally be distributing them to where they are needed.

Abbey, 23, went on to say: “We have just had our first order of 50 for some local GP surgeries.

“But, we need your help and the help of our local community.

“We really need donations from local people or even businesses of clean washed bedding especially pillow cases, as these are quick and easy to make into bags.”

Abbey and Jo have also launched an appeal for residents who can sew to come forward and support their project, all while supporting the NHS.

As well as supporting the NHS, Abbey has also won a place in the prestigious grand final of Miss Intercontinental UK 2020.
