YORK psychologists are investigating the effects of lockdown on disabled children and those with special educational needs.

Researchers led by Dr Umar Toseeb of the University of York are asking parents and carers to complete an online survey about how their children are coping with enforced isolation and the kind of support they need.

The lecturer in psychology with education said: "Children with special educational needs and disabilities (SENDs) have a unique set of strengths and difficulties.  The project will help us to understand the effect of COVID-19 on children with SENDs and their families”.

Trudi Beswick of Caudwell Children, a national charity providing practical and emotional support to disabled children and their families, said: “Families with disabled children are feeling vulnerable and isolated and the increased burden placed on the NHS and social services means that support for disabled children will be adversely impacted for the foreseeable future.” The charity has launched an emergency appeal.
