A GROUP of York residents have come together to collectively cover the distance of a marathon - all to raise money for a cancer support charity.

People from streets in York came together over the weekend to carry out a ‘social distance marathon’ to raise funds for York Against Cancer.

All of the entrants were from Sycamore Terrace, Almery Terrace, Sycamore Place, Longfield Terrace.

Richard Romaniak, one of the residents who took part, said: “We are a fantastic neighbourhood supporting each other and lifting spirits during the pandemic.

“We all had a great time. The generosity in such a testing time is unbelievable and demonstrates our great community spirit here.”

Unlike a normal marathon, there were no age restrictions and any mode of movement is permissible.

Richard said: “There was a great combination of cycling, running, walking, both forwards and backwards, dancing and even three legged walking.”

Participants ranged from two to 90 years old, along with plenty of support from residents’ pets too.

Those that took part, from young to old, did so in fancy dress costumes.

Residents of the streets also watched that took part and offered their gratitude with applause.

So far, the group have raised over £2,200 for York Against Cancer, which includes a £500 gift aid from Aviva.

Richard went on to say: “We have a very supportive local community with a regular newsletter and volunteers supporting those requiring support in these testing times.

“We hold regular social distance based coffee mornings and art exhibitions.

“All members of our community get an accordion accompanied happy birthday on their special day.”
