A CHURCH is holding its first-ever crib festival as a celebration of Christmas.

Visitors to Holy Trinity Church in Elvington, near York, will be able to see up to 20 Nativity scenes, which have been lent by villagers or made by children's groups.

The display also includes a crib which was brought back from the Philippines by the Rev Peter Horsley, rector-in-charge of the group of parishes of which Elvington is part.

He has recently returned from visiting mission work in the Philippines.

Jane Nundy, who is organising the festival with the help of Marian Baldwin and Sue Shaw, said: "We are thrilled to have the nativity figures on display.

"This is the first time we have had a crib festival and we are delighted at the response from everyone."

The festival was due to start at 10am today and run until 5pm, and start tomorrow at 10am and run until 5pm.
