WHEN news broke last week that John Lewis was to close its store in York - many of us reflected on some of our older department stores.
Our photo of the day takes us back around half a century to when Boyes had a department store by York's Ouse Bridge.
Known today for its main York store in Goodramgate, many readers will remember when Boyes was situated by Ouse Bridge.
Indeed, no history of Ouse Bridge would be complete without a chapter on the Boyes department store.
The store was the scene of a dramatic fire which engulfed the entire department store in December 1910.
Postcard images of the time show crowds flocking to the bridge to watch the drama.
Boyes rose from the ashes - it was rebuilt in 1912 - and the 'new' Boyes can be seen in our photo today, looking very different to the way it did before the 'great fire'.
We believe the photo dates from the 1960s or 1970s.
If you have old photos of Boyes on Ouse Bridge - or have memories of working and shopping there, please share them with other readers.
