NORTH Yorkshire-based Make it Wild is about to plant its 50,000th tree since setting out on a 10-year mission to give space back to nature.

Former consultant ear nose and throat surgeon, Helen Neave, and her businessman husband, Christopher, set up Make it Wild after becoming increasingly worried about the impact mankind is having on nature and biodiversity.

They knew that creating new native woodlands would provide an important kickstart to creating vital habitat for wildlife.

They have now created four nature reserves and, with the help of volunteers, will reach the major milestone of planting their 50,000th tree this week.

On Thursday, the group will gather and split into two planting teams.

One will be at the reserve at Dowgill Grange, near Harrogate.

Christopher said: “Life on earth depends on trees, they form entire ecosystems for wildlife but also, through photosynthesis, they produce the oxygen we need to breathe and remove the carbon dioxide that is causing climate change.”
