READERS have been sharing their own memories and photos of Prince Philip in York following his death at the age of 99.
Several have posted photos of the Duke of Edinburgh's final visit to the city in 2012.
It was a memorable day. The Queen and the duke were visiting York as part of her grand Diamond Jubilee tour of the UK to mark her 60th year as monarch. They were accompanied by their granddaughter, Princess Beatrice of York, on her first official engagement in the city
An estimated 15,000 people packed into York city centre for a glimpse of the Royal party and huge crowds cheered them throughout the day at all their stop-off locations: Micklegate Bar, the Minster, Mansion House and the Museum Gardens.
Press reader Sue Gabbatiss took this photo of the royal car driving through York between engagements.
At the Minster, Her Majesty took part in Maundy Thursday - presenting Maundy money to 172 recipients, pensioners nominated for the honour for their service to the church and community.
The day began in the morning, as the royals arrived at York railway station, from where they were driven to Micklegate.
As a duty reporter for The Press that day, I was stationed at Micklegate Bar - the traditional royal entrance into York - and watched as the Queen's motorcade arrived. Just before the bar, the car stopped, and she got out to walk through the bar and meet dignitaries and crowds of wellwishers, who were packed three and four deep into the surrounding area.
The royals were also greeted by young winners of the Press Community Pride Awards who presented them with posies in front of crowds of onlookers.
As custom dictated, Prince Philip, accompanied by Princess Beatrice, walked a few paces behind the Queen.
From my vantage point - almost close enough to reach out and touch the royal party - I was able to snap this close-up of the prince and princess, as well as a photo of the Queen.
Travelling on to the Minster, thousands of people, many waving Union Flags and carrying flowers for the Queen, gathered in the sunshine to see the royal party.
A massive cheer greeted their arrival before the Queen went on to present Maundy money.
The royals then posed on the steps of the Great West Door alongside the Queen’s Yeoman, the Archbishop of York Dr John Sentamu, Dean of York Keith Jones and flower children.
Through the crowds, Press reader Kerry Hodson managed to snap this photo of the duke and princess outside the Minster.
Following a reception in the Deanery, the party went on to the Mansion House for a civic lunch attended by local dignitaries and the winners of the Community Pride Awards 2011.
The visit ended with a visit to a new exhibition at the Yorkshire Museum marking the 800th anniversary of York being granted a Royal Charter by King John.
A memorable day that thousands of people in York will never forget. A historic one too - the last visit of the Duke of Edinburgh to York, and the final visit of The Queen and her devoted husband to a city they had visited many times together in their long, married life.
