I have watched nearly all of Andrew Marr’s Sunday morning BBC TV programmes and have found the topics interesting but several of his guests somewhat bland.
However, this Sunday’s hour about the life of HRH Prince Philip was the best show so far.
His four guests - former Eire President Mary McAleese, former Archbishop of York Dr. John Sentamu, actress and travel presenter Joanna Lumley and former PM Sir John Major - all obviously had met and knew the late Duke and all spoke so passionately, and in a believable way, that was lovely to hear.
Andrew Marr asked sensible, relevant questions, and best of all, he listened without constantly interrupting the speakers.
The Duke of Edinburgh had had such a full and remarkable life, it was going to be very difficult to cram 99 years into one hour. By selecting these four guests, the programme expertly covered his involvement with Irish politics, reconciliation, religion, the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme, the WWF, conservation, the environment, cricket, HM the Queen and all the Royal family, UK politics, his legacy and thoughts on the future.
Sir John Major’s hope for the Queen to be given time and space to grieve was especially poignant. It was so good to hear people talk honestly and without bias and with heartfelt sincerity. I so thoroughly enjoyed this moving programme - well done to all involved!
