HOW ludicrous that soldiers have been banned from using the word ‘lads’ when referring to each other in meetings as part of the Army’s latest gender equality drive. Troops from 22 Engineer Regiment were told to avoid the term because it could cause offence, regardless whether any women are present. Other prohibited words apparently include ‘mankind’ and ‘sportsmanship.
Did they ask whether any women, or men, were actually offended?
When my daughters were young we often went out for the day with my friend and her two boys. I would say “come on girls”, and jokingly apologise to the lads, who thought it was funny. I hope that my behaviour back then hasn’t led to their having lifelong therapy.
