LYNETTE Mills claims the Liberal Democrats have done nothing towards making York greener ('Lib Dems a green party? Not in York', Letters, April 19).
Here is some of what we are doing. (By the way the council is run by a Lib Dem/ Green coalition.)
All the city’s street lights and council offices are now powered 100 per cent by renewable energy.
Thanks to a partnership between the council and a bus operator, York’s Park&Ride has the largest electric bus fleet in the country. We’re creating three super-hubs for fast charging electric vehicles, and transforming the council vehicle fleet to electric cars and lorries.
This spring the council approved a pollinator strategy to protect bees and other insects. We’ve bought 65 hectares of land on which to create a new community forest, and committed to building 650 council homes to passivhaus standard.
We’re extending our safe cycle network out to the villages to give residents a safe alternative to their cars.
Our new head of carbon reduction is creating the carbon cutting roadmap that will enable us to deliver a zero carbon council by 2030. I hope to see the plan adopted in the next few months.
But Lynette doesn’t like a car park so claims nothing is happening. Really?
Christian Vassie,
Chair of the Climate Change Committee,
City of York Council,
