FIRE crews were called to an incident involving a large barn with hundreds of animals inside which caught on fire.
Crews from Acomb, York, Huntington, Northallerton and the water bowser from Boroughbridge all attended a large barn on fire in the Sutton on the Forest area yesterday morning.
The barn contained 80 bales of hay and over 600 pigs. The pigs were all safely removed from the barn.
The fire caused 40 per cent damage to the barn and 100 per cent damage to the hay bales. The farmer assisted with farm equipment to move hay bales.
Crews used one breathing apparatus set, four hose reel jets, a 45mm main jet, a light portable pump, three main pumps, a dam and thermal imaging camera.
The fire is believed to have been started by an electrical fault from an extension lead.
