Some readers might know about a campaign called ‘PeatFree April’, now into its second year trying to get our government to do the right thing and stop the use of peat in horticulture.
The reason we want to stop this is mainly because peat bogs are a massive store of carbon. When they are ‘working’ properly they are one of the few landscapes which sequester carbon, more permanently than forests and soils in many cases. Government agree that conserving peat bogs is the right thing to do and in 2010 said that they were looking for a ban by 2020. When that didn’t happen they said a ban by 2030. I believe the Climate Emergency to be just that, an emergency. So 2030 is too late and I want them to act more swiftly.
I started a petition to Parliament which I’d urge readers to sign, please: tinyurl.com/peatpetition
