IT is good to see finally that work might start on the Castle Gateway scheme. I seem to remember that this was originally called Coppergate 2 back in the Nineties.

There has always been the opportunity to create the river walkway on the Raindale side of the River Foss. This could have been added years ago. More could be made of the riversides.

Cycling has now reached a difficult stage to link some of the excellent routes and extending them with other new routes along both the River Foss and River Ouse.

I imagine this is down to the ownership and use of land between the public and private sector. Then it comes down to the cost of the venture - widening paths and putting in bridges etc.

I do know that the state of Castle Mills car park has deterred some shoppers to use the car park in the past. So, would welcome a multi storey car park.

... ANOTHER consultation over Castle car park/Gateway. Just how much and how many times can the attempt be made to pull the wool over the public's eyes? There must be enough opinions on "sticky post it notes" to paper all the walls in the council offices.

The cigarette packet sketches do highlight what to expect.

After NRM wanting to rule over York Central now we have the YMT wanting a highway from Castlegate straight through this site to the museum entrance, taking over the green eye of York for their own use.

You can also read how they intend to extend into the old car park and remove the area marked as a garden/play area.

They also have an events area. The only bit of greenery is the old stretch of disability car parking in front of Clifford's Tower.

But we must not despair for it seems the the councillor who can take a dog's breakfast and convince himself it's a Michelin star four-course meal is in charge!

... AFTER reading the article in Thursday's Press (Ideas for transformation of city centre car park) relating to Castle car park, the thing I'd most like to see is a barrier of some sort erected around the 'motte' ( the hill around Clifford's Tower).

This is for three reasons:

(1) to prevent injuries on the people who insist climbing and falling down on it

(2) to prevent the destruction of the embankment and destroying the look and flowers on the motte

(3) with the area enclosed it would be an ideal place to create a wildlife meadow for the birds and insects and with a few low-growing trees a habitat for nesting birds.

I can imagine nowhere nicer to sit and take refreshments than with a backdrop with Clifford Tower's motte bedecked with wild flowers.
