IF you spot a big cat in York - it may just be an exotic pet.
City of York Council revealed that only one licence to keep a wild, dangerous or exotic animal is valid and that it is issued to the owner of unusual Savannah cats.
The breed is a cross between a domestic and wild cat and is often larger than most moggies.
Matt Boxall from the council said: “Cats come in a number of different breeds, some of which are not classed as domestic cats, and therefore they may fall into the category of being a dangerous wild animal and need to be licensed.
"Savannah cats are one of the breeds that need to be licensed. It is always important to do your homework to ensure you can provide a safe and happy habitat for your pets, but even more so if they are unusual.
"As this owner did, we’d strongly recommend you research with other enthusiasts and contact public protection to see if they need licensing. As part of the licensing regime you may require an annual inspection from council officers and a vet to ensure everything is in order with the animal and their living environment."
Five wild animal licences have been issued in York since 2016 but this is the only one that is currently valid.
