Further to comments on your website regarding the recycling of Christmas cards, which was published in the Press today, I can confirm that City of York Council is supporting the Woodland Trust's Christmas card recycling scheme.
There are Christmas card recycling points at numerous locations around the city, including all branches of the following stores:
- Tesco
- TK Maxx
- Marks & Spencer
- WH Smith
The collection points will be available until January 31.
The council is currently unable to accept Christmas cards on our kerbside recycling collection service for two reasons:
- Christmas cards are generally made of very low quality fibre, which means that the fibres that make up the card are very short This results in a poor quality product at the end of the recycling process.
- Christmas cards can be covered in a range of glitters and glues which are difficult to remove during the standard recycling process.
The separate collection of cards by national schemes, such as that organised by the Woodland's Trust, means that it is more cost effective to recycle them.
