A FEW comments on your articles "Wills wings it to RAF Linton" (The Press, January 4) and Pilot Wills Shows Off His New Kit' (The Press, January 8).

First of all, I'm not a royalist, nor a fan of all things that emanate from that insatiable consumer of public money, the Royal Family.

But I am an aware observer of Ryedale's environment and the way it is so often used and abused by the powers that be, in this case RAF Linton-on-Ouse, and its cavalier attitude to the people it so unfairly targets with its noise pollution.

This pollution has been getting worse over the last decade (along with the carbon emissions) from the 55 Tucanos stationed there.

Noise from the current fleet of aircraft is often intolerable and represents a serious problem to all those affected.

Throughout the year we are subjected to hordes of wheeling, diving, droning and extremely noisy Tucanos on at least five days a week and several hours a day. This is in addition to the problem of low-flying jets from other bases in the UK.

Noise pollution from RAF Linton-on-Ouse represents the unacceptable face of RAF training and should not be forgotten in any discussion of the same.

It must be borne in mind that (as in our pollution scenarios) the principle of the "polluter must pay" should operate, whether it be noise from a factory, road transport or the RAF.

Everybody knows that some training is inevitable, but not at the level and concentration currently in operation.

Looking ahead, I'm sure that when the decision to close RAF Linton on Ouse is acted upon, no amount of royal PR exercises will make any difference.

Moral I'm sure will wave goodbye (and say good riddance) on that fateful day.
