I SAW in The Press that councillors will meet today to discuss the annual resurfacing programme for roads and footpaths in York.
On the front page of the same edition of The Press, the headlines ask how we are to make savings to offset the £1 million hole in York's finances ((You choose, January 7).
Perhaps at the meeting today the two could be discussed in tandem. All across York footpaths are damaged by vehicles parking on them. Damage is caused to pavements, kerb stones, drains and grass verges. All of these have to be repaired at our expense.
A typical example is in Beech Avenue, Holgate, where at the present time they are repairing the footpath.
The damage was caused by parked vehicles, and will be caused again after the present repairs are complete, so the repair cycle will eventually start all over again.
Until repairs are carried out the footpath is a danger to all pedestrians.
If it was made illegal for motorists to park on footpaths, tickets could be put on any vehicle breaking this law.
This would have a twofold effect. It would stop motorists from doing it in the first place, and the revenue from parking tickets could offset the cost of some of the repairs.
