A COLD war bunker, dungeon, church and archaeological dig are among more than 50 venues throwing open their doors to York residents later this month.
The city is staging its annual Residents First weekend on Saturday and Sunday, January 26 and 27, when local people will be able to see for themselves what attracted 4.2 million visitors to York last year.
More than 50 tourist hot spots will be free of charge and a number of restaurants are also offering discounts to residents.
Tourism annually brings £333 million into the city and helps create 10,000 jobs. Attractions taking part in the weekend include the Cold War bunker in Holgate, the archaeological DIG at Hungate, the Richard III Museum at Monk Bar, York Castle Museum, York Dungeon and Eden Camp, near Malton.
Andrew Scott, chairman of York Tourism Bureau, said: "This is a thank you to the residents of York for their support for our industry and the friendly welcome they provide to our visitors."
Residents who want to make the most of the event will need a valid YORKcard to gain admission to the participating venues. A card is required for each resident over the age of five (the old blue, white and red card is no longer valid).
Anyone living within the City of York Council area is entitled to a YORKcard free of charge. The card provides free or discounted entry to a selection of leisure facilities in the city, including museums and swimming pools, and also acts as a library card.
Roger Ranson, assistant director of economic development at York council, said: "Many of York's top tourist attractions are taking part in Residents First weekend and it really is a great opportunity for local people to visit them free of charge.
"There are a number of new attractions taking part this year, including DIG Hungate, Eden Camp and the Central Methodist Church, so there really is something for everyone to see."
Further information on the weekend will be available from the Information Point in Parliament Street from Friday, Jaunary 25, until Sunday, January 27, or download a copy of the guide from www.york.gov.uk Some venues need to limit their numbers and so tickets will be on a first come first served basis.
