This Halloween there is no short of spooky places to visit in York. Not only does its history of "guts, gore, torture and ghosts" give it a spooky atmosphere, but The International Ghost Research Foundation even declared York as the most haunted city in Europe.

So, there shouldn’t be a shortage of haunted places to visit in the most haunted city in Europe this Halloween.

Hotels.com have listed some of the most haunted places in the city if you fancy going ghost hunting this Halloween.

York Dungeons

It wouldn’t be a list of haunted locations without dungeons on there somewhere. And York dungeons are definitely no stranger to some spooky horrors. The attraction features funny historical characters that can take you through different eras of history that let you see, hear and smell York's historic horrors.

Ye Old Starr Inne

Ye Olde Starre Inne is said to be the oldest pub in York, however, there has been some dispute over which pub is actually in the oldest building.

The pub claims to be the most haunted in York, so if you fancy a ghost sighting with your pint, this may just be the place for you.

The Treasurer’s House

This house was once the house of York Minster’s first treasurer.

The house was originally built over a Roman road and Roman-era column bases were even unearthed during renovations.

In 1953, a plumber working on the house saw a carthorse emerge through a brick wall, followed by a slightly shabby column of Roman reserve legionaries. Definitely add The Treasurer's House onto your list of ghost spotting locations.

York Minster

York Minster is one of the most important religious buildings in England – the seat of the Archbishop of York and one of the largest of its kind in Europe!

A building with so much history comes hand in hand with ghost stories, and York Minster is no exception. One story from the 20s depicts the tale of tourists who were approached by a sailor. He whispered to one of the women and then departed.

He explained to the unknowing woman that he had made a pact with her brother, stating that the sibling that died first would come back to confirm the existence of an afterlife. Her brother had been killed at sea but returned to honour the pact.

The Golden Fleece

Fancy spending the night in a haunted pub? Then The Golden Fleece is for you!

One of many pubs that claims to be the most haunted in York, the Golden Fleece invites you to find out for yourself by staying in one of four cosy bedrooms.

The most common ghost you’ll likely see is that of Lady Alice Peckitt, wife of a former Lord Mayor of York.

Yorkshire Museum

As any historical structure, the Yorkshire Museum has had its fair experience of ghosts. The most commonly sighted ghost is a man in Georgian clothes who is particularly interested in finding one book from the museum’s library. He is seen pulling it off the shelf, and always on a Sunday evening.
