TWO North Yorkshire Police officers who climbed 100 feet down a sheer sea cliff to help a man who had landed on rocks below have been nominated for The National Police Bravery Awards.
PC Steve Merritt and PC Mandir Xherija used an old fishing rope to get down to the man at Scarborough on 10 October last year, and gave him CPR for about an hour and a half on slippy and hazardous rocks as the tide was coming in.
A Coastguard rescue helicopter winched the injured man and then the two police officers to safety because it was too dangerous for them to climb back the way they had come.
North Yorkshire Police Federation Chair Rob Bowles said: "“This was an incredible attempt to save a life by the officers. They really did go way above and beyond to try and help and they are very worthy nominees.”
Despite the officers' efforts, the man later died in hospital.
