THOUSANDS of motorists faced a nightmare journey into York this morning after the eastbound carriageway of the A64 was shut following a smash.
The major artery into the city was closed after the accident which early reports say involved a car leaving the road and ending up in a ditch near Bilbrough Top.
Police then shut the A64 between Tadcaster and Copmanthorpe. It is believed the road could be shut until at least 11am.
No details of injuries to anyone involved have yet been released.
Locals diversions were being put in place and a larger diversion using the A59 onto the York Outer Ringroad was planned. Those diversions were likely to cause more difficulties on already busy routes.
