QUIRKY experiences in the York area inspired two mums to set up a gift-giving business.

Friends Rachel Marshall and Ema Broadhurst launched the online Uniquely Local experience business to give people a wide range of gifts not found on the high street or wrapped in plastic.

They are now hoping to attract custom from people who want to give something special this Christmas, and lend much-needed support to their experience suppliers, who are all local businesses.

Their experiences include a vineyard tour with wine tasting near York, a food tasting tour of the city, jewellery-making workshops, flights, alpaca walking, quad biking, and axe throwing.

“Our experience providers have had an especially tough pandemic,” said Rachel. “As people-facing businesses they were not able to interact with or welcome visitors face-to-face for months on end.

“We did work hard with them to promote online experiences but there is nothing better than engaging directly with customers. This is why this festive season is so important to us and to them – a good Christmas means the long term financial security of these special experiences.

“With options to suit all budgets, from experiences starting at just £10.95 to some indulgent treats and grand gestures Uniquely Local is committed to making this Christmas as perfect as possible for people.”

Every Yorkshire gift experience is handpicked, with more than 200 now on offer.

These also include make-at-home kit experiences, creative crafty sessions, and outdoor adventures.

Any packaging used is eco friendly and made from 100 per cent recycled cardboard, and the duo, who both live in Huby, North Yorkshire, look to work with partners and providers who share their values.

“Did you know that right here in Yorkshire we have an award-winning, family-run vineyard making the most spectacular wine? Or, that it’s possible to learn traditional blacksmith forging techniques in only one day?” said Rachel.“Or even that there are herds of Alpacas that you can take for a walk in the stunning Hambleton Hills?”

Rachel said Uniquely Local aimed to promote and showcase these experiences to give customers the chance ‘to discover and delight themselves and their loved ones with a truly unique and special gift experience’.

“After the past year and half, we all deserve some smiles.”

Each experience comes with the option of a print-at-home voucher or a printed option or gift box.
