York students are making waves across the North England music scene, report Isabella Miller and Carla Gozo
HERE are some names to look out for in 2022. Lewis Southgate, Michael Tuck and Jordan Spurs met at school in Sunderland and formed a band, but it wasn’t till they met Charlie Bridge while studying at university in York that they became Listomania.
The band have been making noise in and around York, catching the attention of the BBC in October 2020 after they made a bold move outside the BBC York Radio station:
“We went to the BBC Radio York building with loads of chalk and wrote on the ground outside the entrance ‘Look Both Ways by Listomania out now’. In the morning, BBC Radio York called us and said they would play our song” said Charlie, the drummer.
This is just one example of the exciting opportunities that have come their way since October 2018 when they started to develop their sound.
Jordan, the frontman, and Michael, bass, both studied music at York St John, this gave the boys access to the studios and rehearsal spaces.
Jordan said: “The uni was very accommodating of us and knew that we were doing music outside of our studies. They still allowed us to use the facilities to practice.”
Lewis, on guitar, said: “Without access to the studios and room at YSJ we wouldn’t have had the starting success we have had now.”
The boys graduated from York St John last year and have since moved to Leeds, but they credit their progress to their three years in York.
Last month, the boys played the Crescent in York. They said this was a great experience because due to studies and Covid the band didn’t get to play in the city while they lived there. “It was nice to be back at the Crescent, in the city we love, doing something we had been trying to do for three years,” Michael said.
Jordan added: “There are so many venues we are still keen to play, we are planning to play a free gig at the Stone Roses bar next month.”
