EAST Yorkshire teenager Klachen Cheshire is one of 15 athletes chosen by double Olympic champion Dame Kelly Holmes to go On Camp With Kelly.

Driffield-based Cheshire, who competes for Hull Achilles Athletics Club, will benefit from Holmes' exclusive mentoring initiative for talented young female middle distance athletes, which is backed by Norwich Union.

Cheshire, of Lockington, has been invited to attend a selection day at the UK Athletics High Performance Centre, in Birmingham, on Sunday, January 27, following her excellent performances over 800 metres and 1,500m in 2007.

The athletes will take part in various challenges and will be assessed by Holmes with the assistance of On Camp With Kelly staff and representatives from UK Athletics.

If successful, Cheshire will attend a Norwich Union-funded educational camp at Loughborough University from April 1-10, when she would learn all about what it takes to become a world class athlete.

Since On Camp With Kelly started in 2004, about 40 girls have been involved in the initiative which includes educational and training camps, exhibition races, financial and medical assistance as well as mentoring support.

Holmes said: "All the girls invited to the selection day are very talented young athletes as their performances in 2007 show.

"At the selection, I will be looking for evidence that they have a real desire to achieve and the determination to become a world class international athlete.

"If the athletes demonstrate those qualities, they will be invited to become part of On Camp With Kelly."

Tanya Veingard, head of sponsorship at Norwich Union, said: "As the team behind UK Athletics, we're proud to be able to offer support for all levels of athletics - from grassroots through to elite.

"Through our support of On Camp With Kelly, we are delighted to be helping nurture and develop talented girls into world class athletes that Britain can be proud of."
