York Under-11s Schoolboys are through to the semi-finals of the Green 'Un Cup after a 4-1 victory over Bassetlaw.

Only Sheffield now stand between York and a place in the final, where they would be looking to emulate the all-conquering side of 2004/5 which last lifted the trophy.

The quarter-final win was no more than York deserved after producing some excellent flowing football at times.

Their performance was all the more remarkable as they trailed the hosts 1-0 at the interval due to some indecisive finishing in the early exchanges.

Aaron Collis went close early on as he rounded the Law 'keeper but his shot glanced the far post. Harvey Rowson-Jeffrey spurned a good opportunity when he miscued a chance with only the 'keeper to beat.

Against the run of play, Bassetlaw were awarded a dubious looking free-kick on the edge of the York box and the resulting shot gave 'keeper Ben Cahill little chance of making a save.

York put themselves under some pressure to respond in the second half - and respond they did in style with arguably their best half of football this season.

The lively Dylan Howlett soon had York on level terms when a good first touch created space in the hosts' penalty area and his shot gave the 'keeper no chance.

Rowan Capper once again got on the scoresheet after a surge into the Bassetlaw area and a calmly despatched finish gave York the lead.

There was no let up and Rowson-Jeffrey earned reward for his endeavour when he connected sweetly with a right-footed shot, which easily eluded the Bassetlaw 'keeper.

In the closing stages, Howlett collected his second and York's fourth when he scored following a goalmouth scramble.

Harry Lynn was voted man of the match after an outstanding defensive display at centre-half.

Makeshift left-back Alex Robinson put in an encouraging performance, while the central midfield pairing of Tom Gore and Kieran Smith dealt efficiently with any Bassetlaw raids.

The energy and awareness of Howlett also featured strongly in York's success.

Coach Ian Hutchinson said: "I was delighted with the way we responded after finding ourselves behind at half-time.

"The work ethic really shone through and, coupled with an efficient passing game, that resulted in a comfortable win.

"The centre-half pairing of Harry Lynn and Nigel Holland looked at its most solid and the hard-working midfield unit of Capper, Gore, Rowson-Jeffrey and Smith made sure Bassetlaw rarely threatened from open play.

"I was pleased for Dylan Howlett, who collected two of our goals, as his quality and commitment deserved it.

"Hopefully, the boys will perform as well against Sheffield in the semi-final, which will present us a chance of some early silverware."

The U11s are next in action today when they travel to East Cleveland in a league fixture.
