I am writing in response to K Barnes's letter, criticising myself for asking what good Prince William, pictured, would be in a conflict situation (Insult to Royalty, Letters, January 16).

While this person accused me of insulting the history of the Royal Family, he did not answer my question, so I will repeat it.

What is the point of Prince William been trained to be a pilot at the taxpayers' expense, when he is never going to be involved in military conflict, and would it not be more beneficial to give the space to someone else who will be available to serve their country?

I suggest some people should actually understand the content of a letter before jumping on their high horse.

  • WHAT an appalling letter from Adam McCartney, York (Prince Will to quaff wine and guzzle swan, Letters, January 8) about Prince William coming for a short time to Linton-on-Ouse to learn to fly.

It's a great honour that the heir to the throne of England is coming to stay in Yorkshire and why shouldn't he get special treatment - after all he is a special young man, but also so ordinary in every way.

As for William and Harry not being able to go into combat one day for us, I would remind Mr McCartney that Prince Andrew fought for us in the Falklands War.

Also Prince Harry was very keen to lead his platoon in dangerous Iraq until the authorities stepped in and prevented him going, as it would have put many of our young soldiers in further danger and the terrorists would have increased efforts to kill him.

Perhaps Mr McCartney would prefer to disband the monarchy, and have a republic with someone like Mugabe in control?
