At last, Strensall Road in Huntington has been recognised as a speeding hotspot (Plan to tackle speed hotspots, The Press January 10).

I hope that when this "medium risk" area is assessed, consideration is given to improvements at the zebra crossing outside the memorial hall.

Often traffic does not stop for people using this crossing, making it difficult when trying to cross the road with young children and/or a pushchair.

Last week a driver actually took the trouble to wave and laugh as he speeded through - it was a shame he didn't take the trouble to stop. Waiting for traffic to show signs of slowing down and stopping at this crossing is mostly in vain - and very frustrating.

The memorial hall is busy with young children every weekday (Huntington pre-school and toddler groups), as well as other events daily, and many people attend on foot. The speed of traffic and the crossing problems are an accident waiting to happen.

I have raised this issue on several occasions with the Huntington parish clerk, who I understand has received a response back from York council saying that the problem is down to bad driving.

The installation of a flashing "slow down 30mph" sign, improved lighting near the crossing, and a change to a pelican crossing would all help the situation. Indeed, a repair to the beacon, which appears to have been knocked down early in December, would be an improvement in the short term.

Now that this road has been flagged up as an area of road safety concern, please can we have some improvements soon. In the meantime, drivers please remember the zebra crossing rules and consider other users as you drive along this road.
