FLOODING caused misery for rush-hour motorists this morning as swollen rivers and submerged roads brought gridlock to much of York.
The heavily-used A19 commuter route into the city was shut between the A64 and the Fordlands Road junction in Fulford, after the road flooded.
Traffic quickly built up on the A64 on the approach to Grimston Bar interchange while both Tadcaster Road and Hull Road, from Dunnington, also became heavily congested.
Huge queues built up on the A19 from Selby and there were also major delays on the A1237 around the outer ring road as drivers tried to avoid the A19.
Flooding also saw the closure of Skeldergate between the Terry Avenue junction and the B1227 Micklegate junction in York.
In Naburn, the B1222 (York Road) was impassable between Moor Lane and Naburn Lock.Main Street in Nether Poppleton was shut between the Riversvale Drive and the Millfield Lane junctions, while Main Street in Sutton Upon Derwent, Cattal Moor Lane in Cattal, and Market Place in Cawood were also all closed.
Further delays were caused by a crash involving a lorry on the A168, northbound at the A167 junction in Topcliffe.
