NORTH Yorkshire ace of clubs Simon Dyson was aiming to make a quick impact in the Qatar Masters as the European Golf Tour shuttles across the Middle East today.

Dyson, who resumed his campaign for a place in the world's top 50, dropped to 70th spot after he bagged a joint 23rd place in the Abu Dhabi Championships in the United Arab Emirates last week.

He was one of the early starters in a threesome alongside Scotland's Marc Warren and India's leading player Jyoti Randhawa at the Doha Golf Club today in an event which carries $2,500,000 in prize money.

Ten of the world's top 30 players are competing for a winner's cheque of more than £212,000, though defending champion Retief Goosen has withdrawn with an eye injury.

Closer to home, Selby Golf Club stars Aran Wainwright and former Euro Tour pro Nick Ludwell impressed in the Yorkshire PGA Overseas Championship in Portugal.

Wainwright was runner-up with 143 stableford points, with Ludwell third. Selby also finished second in the team event.
