ELIANE is a glamorous, blonde, pianist/vocalist, so comparisons to Diana Krall are inevitable. Brazilian Eliane's two-fisted piano is a passionate alternative to Diana's studiedly economic approach.
Her vocals share Diana's appealing cool, but in the husky, conversational vein of Astrud Gilberto.
A couple of tunes have never been heard before.
Eliane's husband, bass player Marc Johnson, played with the Bill Evans Trio until Evans' untimely demise in 1980.
The revered pianist palmed him a cassette of songs in progress. The title track is from that cassette, and Eliane's added lyrics are a highlight.
Evans completists will treasure track 17, the lo-fi cassette original. Evanesque is another cassette fragment developed by Eliane into a pianistic marvel.
A programme of American standards, such as the essential-My Foolish Heart, plus the partnership of Marc Johnson and drummer Joey Baron results in a seductive 17-track album.
