An overwhelming display of public support for landlords who faced having their licence revoked has stopped a York pub from possible closure.
Last December, two local residents called upon City of York Council to review the licence of The Golden Ball pub, in Cromwell Road, Bishophill, citing it caused crime and disorder public nuisance in the area.
Noise in the late hours of the night caused disruption to residents living near the pub, said complainants, Mrs C Kennedy and Mr C Summers.
The complainants have now withdrawn their objections - thanks to a show of support from local residents.
Twenty-six locals who live near the pub wrote to the pub and council with letters of support citing the pub did not cause any disruption to the area. Many more residents also attended a public meeting rallying support for the pub.
John Lacy, licensing manager at City of York Council, confirmed the complaints have since withdrawn their application to the council, though they did not allude to a reason why.
A local resident said: "I have lived in the area for three years and regularly walk past and visit the pub. Not on one occasion have I been aware of any public nuisance or crime and disorder. The Golden Ball pub is run excellently under the watchful eye of very capable landlords."
Another resident, who lives next door to the pub, said: "I live next-door to the Golden Ball and never have I had a reason to complain.
"I have never seen an example of rowdy behaviour in or around the pub - even on a Friday or Saturday night.
"The pub is well managed by its licensees who are pillars of the local community." Landlady Linda Foster said Mrs C Kennedy and Mr C Summers never had grounds for their complaint in the first place.
"It was a ridiculous complaint and one which attracted lots of support for the pub by local residents," she said.
"We had numerous people coming in to the pub and writing letters to us saying how ridiculous the complaint was and saying how well-run our pub is.
"The complaint made by the two residents wasted a lot of everyone's time, but I am pleased to say everything is back to normal and we are still running as usual.
"I would like to say a big thank- you to everyone who has supported us in the recent months."
