WITH reference to the article in The Press on Monday, January 21, entitled: "Where have the landmarks gone?", and the mention of the Old George Hotel, Fossgate.
I was astounded to read the report from the York Civic Trust, "the sacrifice of the Old George Hotel has opened out exciting possibilities for dignity and design along its course".
What happened? That monstrosity which has been called "the concrete battleship" was built. Whatever happened to "dignity and design"?
It is completely out of character for a city centre building - it stands out as an ugly statue.
I would like to know how planning permission was granted for this, when over the years it has been refused for far better structures.
I, for one, remember the Old George Hotel, and when I walk towards Stonebow I cannot help but compare what was there before with what has replaced it.
It would be interesting to know what York Civic Trust think since 1955.
