ICE hockey player Lloyd Gibson is aiming to be the best of British.

The Selby College student is on course to fulfil his dream of selection for the Great Britain men's team after figuring for the national Under-20s side.

Gibson, a second year BTEC National Diploma in Sport student, picked up valuable international experience with the U20s, who faced tough opposition in the World Championships.

Competing in division one group B', Great Britain suffered five defeats as they were relegated to division two.

Their opening game against Slovenia ended 3-3, but GB lost out on penalties.

A 5-2 defeat by Hungary was followed by a 6-0 loss to Latvia and a 9-1 trouncing by Belarus. Needing to beat France in their final game to avoid relegation, Britain went down 6-2.

However, Gibson is keen to learn from the experience as he continues his career with Sheffield Scimitars men's team in the English Premier League.

The youngster has toured a host of countries through the sport, including Germany, Sweden, the Czech Republic, America, Canada, Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland.

Gibson, a star student who is predicted to achieve all distinctions in his National Diploma, has played ice hockey for more than ten years.

He developed an interest in the sport after watching a match with his uncle when he was just six years old.

After completing his course at Selby College, Gibson aims to study at Sheffield Hallam University to become a PE teacher.

He said: "All I wanted to do is sport and it's fantastic that I can come to college and learn about my hobby.

"I really enjoy learning about every aspect of sport."

Gibson also works part-time in the Selby College gym, The Energy Room.
