Heworth go forth with HEWORTH ARLC Under-13s began their defence of the Yorkshire League Cup with an emphatic 52-0 win over Garforth Tigers.
The scoreline does not do justice to the Leeds side who gave 100 per cent and at times showed excellent skills, but they were no match for a Villagers side led by hat-trick man Jordan Potter.
The muddy conditions made open rugby difficult but both sides decided throwing the ball around was the best option and this led to an entertaining game.
The opening exchanges were tight until Heworth centre Potter powered over for the first of his three tries.
His right-wing mate, Josh Poulter, also scored twice, jinking past several defenders, as their partnership created havoc in the Garforth defence.
Alex Clough had an outstanding game at full-back and got on the scoresheet with a great run, while other try-scorers were Liam Jackson (2), Dan Coulson, Elliott Bulmer and Flan Naismith.
Conversions were added by Harry Deighton (3), who excelled at hooker before going off with a bloodied nose, and Jackson, who sent over a brace of kicks.
Ben Barker took over well at dummy-half, and with Peter Clarke, William Barratt and Jacob Field continued to hold out the Tigers' attack.
David Hayes directed play from stand-off and was supported by the aggressive and quick Jack Stewart. Poulter and Billy Legg, who defended with skill and fearlessness, were the joint-men of the match.
Heworth ARLC U12s also won 52-0 on a good weekend for the young Villagers.
They bounced back from a disappointing few weeks to turn in a sparkling performance and overwhelm Thornhill Trojans, getting off to a great start and keeping up the pressure for the whole match in an almost error-free performance.
Hooker Jack Rowson led the way with four close-range tries, while the second-row pairing of Tom Gurden, who bagged a hat-trick, and Richard Ashton, who also got a try, produced some fine attacking moves and solid defence.
Further touchdowns came from Dave Larkin and full-back Jamie Wyard, who weaved past the Thornhill defenders to score from inside his own half. Goals were added by Danny Simpson (4), Lewis Hartley (1) and Jack Rowson (1).
