A SMALL terrier completed a six-day trek across North Yorkshire to his home after getting lost in woods east of Malton.
Shadrach, who was named after one of the Dingle family in Emmerdale, crossed 13 miles of countryside after becoming lost during a walk near Weaverthorpe.
Dog lover Hayley Agar, 22, and her 20-year-old brother, Raymond, spent 12 hours scouring pitch-black countryside with a torch for the Jack Russell before abandoning the search at 4.30am.
Mother-of-one Ms Agar, of Scarborough, said: "I was devastated. He's part of the family and my seven-month-old daughter Lacie kept looking for him wondering where he was."
Almost a week after Hayley had given up hope of seeing Shadrach again, she was astonished to receive a call from her brother telling her the terrier had turned up safe and well at her mum's house in the next street to her.
"He must have just been making his way home all that time - covering about two miles a day.
"He must also have crossed the busy A64 at some point. It is just incredible. I really have no idea how he's made his way home because we have never walked a distance like that.
"I can't believe it has happened, but I am so delighted he's back home. He must have his own in-built homing beacon."
