POLICE have today named the young cyclist killed after colliding with a car on a busy bridge in York.

The dead man is 22-year-old Adam Lapinski, of Ancress Walk, York, a Polish national who only moved to the city with his family within the last year.

His bike collided with a red Citroen C3 on Holgate Bridge known locally as the Iron Bridge at around 2.20pm on Tuesday, and paramedics treated him in the road for head injuries, but he died at around 5pm at York Hospital.

It is not yet known how the accident - which led to Holgate Road, a major York commuter route, being closed at its junction with Blossom Street and Dalton Terrace while the crash scene was examined by police - happened, but witnesses are being urged to contact the Central Area Roads Policing Group on 0845 6060247 and leave a message for Traffic Constable Daniella Hyde.

An inquest into Mr Lapinski's death is expected to be opened within the next few days.
