HIGH-FIVE endeavours fired North Yorkshire's lord of the swing Simon Dyson to within two shots of world number one Tiger Woods.

In a stunning return to form, Dyson was the lone Englishman among a pack of 11 players on five-under 67 on the opening day of the Dubai Desert Classic.

In the 30-year-old Dyson's sights was the ominous figure of Woods, who, bidding for a third Dubai title, carded a seven-under 65 on the opening day.

Dyson, who is aiming to break into the world's top 50 players this year - he is currently ranked 71 - was quick off the mark in the opening round with a birdie on the second on the Majilis course at the Dubai Golf Club complex in the United Arab Emirates.

He then dropped a shot on the par-three fourth, but it was to be the Malton and Norton GC member's lone blemish.

He was back under par with a birdie on the ninth before then producing a stunning inward nine.

Dyson picked up shots on the tenth, 13th and 14th holes before rounding off his opening round with a birdie on the last for his five-under.
