RESIDENTS of North Yorkshire are being encouraged to have a "green" Shrove Tuesday - by composting their pancake leftovers.
With it being Pancake Day on Tuesday, the message is being sounded that egg shells and lemon peel make "great ingredients" for compost bins.
Egg shells - rich in nutrients - can be crushed and added to the compost bin, where they will help create a rich, natural fertiliser for your garden.
Cardboard egg boxes can be torn up and added to the compost, providing a rich source of carbon and fibre.
Lemon peelings will add valuable nutrients to compost, and banana, apple and orange skins and peelings can also be composted.
