FIREFIGHTERS have put out the fire that led to residents in part of the Yorkshire Dales having to keep their doors and windows closed today.
North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service was concerned about the effects of smoke from a major fire.
Seven crews from five stations tackled the blaze in a barn which contained straw, tyres and cylinders.
The area affected stretched from Scotton, south of Richmond in Swaledale to Tunstall, a village towards Catterick Garrison, on the edge of the Vale of York, about two and a half miles away.
Earlier today firefighters warned that because of the smoke coming from the blaze residents in Scotton, Tunstall and surrounding areas should close their doors and windows.
They had to use engines to relay water to the barn because of its location.
The crews came from Northallerton, Richmond, Reeth, Leyburn, and Bedale stations. The last three stations are only manned by on-call firefighters who attend fires from their homes or places of work.
The cause of the fire has yet to be established and there are no reports of any injuries.
