Detective Inspector Helen Collier said: “We understand this is a frightening incident and the children absolutely did the right thing by reporting the incident to the school and their parents.
“Officers were promptly deployed to Hall Road and the man was swiftly arrested at a nearby property following an area search.
“Subsequently, a search was also conducted of the property and officers recovered and seized three air rifles.
“The 36-year-old man remains in police custody and continues to be questioned by detectives to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
“I’d like to reassure residents that they can expect to see an increase policing presence as officers from our neighbourhood policing team continue to patrol the area.
“I would encourage anybody who has any concerns to come and speak to the team."
