A long-established newsagent in York has closed.

Bailiffs called at 32 Fishergate last month to re-possess the property, which traded as Fishergate News.

In addition to being a newsagent, it also sold arts and craft supplies.

York Press: The notice from Strikes

Newark-based Strikes Bailiffs acted on September 12 on behalf of landlord Richard Bettison of St Mary’s Close, Hessle, according to notices in the shop window.

The business is listed as Charlie Big Ltd, which Companies House says is a newsagents and retail company based on Foxwood Lane, York. Its sole director is listed as Andrew Bartle, of the same address.

The Strikes letter said that as a consequence of entry, the Lease is forfeited and the premises have been secured.

In 2017, the news agency close to the York bar walls suffered a brutal siege where one of two attackers had threatened to slit the throats of terrified workers inside.

Mr Bartle defended his staff and family and initially faced charges himself as the Crown had believed he “went too far”.

He denied affray and was formally acquitted when the prosecution stopped presenting evidence two hours into the trial during February 2018. The man with the knife and hammer was sentenced to 3.5 years in prison.
