YORK is set for a new dentist clinic in the city centre.

The move comes as the city continues to suffer a shortage of dentists.

Dental chain mydentist is coming to Stonebow House, occupying the unit that was previously Supersonic gym.

Mydentist is the UK largest dental care provider with 550  practices across the UK, treating 4 million patients a year, both NHS and private.

The nearest branches to York are in Aldwark, Pocklington and Knaresborough, though there are several in Leeds.

The York branch will offer a full range of services and treatments when it is expected to open in “the New Year.”

However, mydentist says it cannot yet say when it plans to open the branch in Stonegate or comment further.

“It’s very early days, so at this stage I don’t have any further details we can share,” a spokesperson told the Press. However, mydentist would comment when it is ready to.

The news of the mydentist arrival comes as the revitalised Stonebow House in York City Centre has recruited its final tenant, now filling the venue.

Joining mydentist in the New Year will be the Roxy Ball Room, taking the middle of the three ground floor units.

The Roxy Ball Room will offer a variety of games such as mini bowling, karaoke, crazy pool, ping pong, shuffleboard and ice-free curling.

The Stonebow House site will be the 20th Roxy Ball Room, which comes as the company celebrates the tenth anniversary of its first venue in Boar Lane, Leeds.

The third tenant in Stonebow House is the Co-op, which has been there since August 2021.

Wetherby-based Oakgate Group has regenerated this landmark building, which also includes repurposing the long-term vacant office space into luxury apartments, which are all sold and fully occupied.

The £17m redevelopment scheme has seen the original Stonebow House stripped back to its core and remodelled to include 13 apartments, 4 duplex penthouses and 31,500 sq. ft of retail and leisure space.

Richard France, Managing Director of Oakgate Group said: “The transformation of Stonebow House, is now nearing completion with the occupation of the final two commercial units, bringing more vibrancy and life into the immediate area.

"The revitalised building is providing a new community for residents with retail, leisure and healthcare enabling it to continue to play an important part in Yorks varied and historic heritage.”

Roxy Leisure’s CEO, Matthew Jones commented: “We are really happy to be working Oakgate on this project, the building provides the perfect space and location for our 20th site opening in early 2024.”

Stonebow House was built in 1964, following York’s slum clearance programme, and was originally designed by Wells, Hickman and Partners.

It has had a chequered history in the eyes of York residents and the design for the rejuvenation of the building were by DLA Architecture.
